Knemon

January 17, 2007

The ‘grouch’ in Menander’s play The Dyskolos.  Knemon is an old curmudgeon who makes everyone in the town miserable.  He also has the good looking daughter, who is pursued, setting the plot in motion.  The division between Aristophanes and Menander is considered to separate the Old Greek Comedy from the New.  The Dyskolos is the only surviving example of New Comedy.
